Bai Ye



 

白夜说他只是站在门口看着进来的、出去的既不属于里面的也不属于外面的。去年我跟他在讨论分水岭的时候,他就热衷于总结西安艺术家的共同处境:有一份相对稳定的工作,同时坚持艺术梦想。

 

Bai Ye says that he likes to “just stand on the threshold and watch those people passing through the gate, belonging to neither inside or outside.” I could see his enthusiasm on analyzing Xi’an artists’ common situation when we were talking about “Watershed” project last year. Most of local artists have stable income and never let go their artistic dreams.

 

白夜迷恋悖论,体现在他给自己起的名字白夜里;他的性格也是货真价实的双重性格,他常常叮咛我们不要泄露他的真实姓名和他的那份相对稳定的工作。在他的艺术里面,他也设计和大量的符号密码:如果你要了解他到底通过绘画表达什么,必须通过他的亲自翻译不可。我甚至建议他干脆编一本《符典》算了。

 

Bai Ye is infatuated with antinomy, which is obvious in his name “Bai Ye”. (Bai means white, and Ye means dark night.) He has genuine double characters with one hidden from the other. His art is full of symbols and secret codes of which the meanings are hard to comprehend without his own “interpretation”. I really think he should make a Symbol Dictionary.

 

他说他尽是画一些私密性的东西但是他在艺术车间里面是最热心公共事业的引进有价值的艺术空间、艺术工作室和艺术家。作为艺术家和厂里沟通的最重要桥梁,他心甘情愿地在帮助别人和艺术区整体环境操心。

 

He says his paintings are all about “secrets”, but he is the most concerned one about “public” business in the arts district, to introduce valuable art spaces, studios and artists. As an important role to connect the artists and the factory, he devotes his heart to the environment without any complaints.

 

白夜以他是纺织城艺术车间的发现者和发起者的身份而骄傲,他也在通过大量琐碎的工作来继续填充这两个身份的内涵。

 

Always taking great pride in his identities of being the discoverer and founder of Textile City arts district, he has been trying to fill in the two identities through monotonous trivial works.

 

 

跟很多学院派艺术家一样,白夜也通过表现主义抽象来配合他对学院艺术的见。跟很多西安艺术家一样,他也最终发明了一种传统西方之间左右逢源的符号。跟很多从更加宽阔的视野理解艺术的艺术家一样,白夜热爱阅读哲学书籍和实验小说。跟很多喜欢或者不得不独立思考的艺术家一样,白夜也发展出自己的一套个人系统,只要你愿意,你就可以象爱丽斯梦游仙镜一样进入白夜的世界——一个跟现实世界有强烈疏离感的世界。只不过你不是通过兔子洞进入,而是通过独特的五颜六色的管状通道,再加上白夜亲自为你做导游。在这个世界里,有白夜重新解释的神、死亡、佛、地狱等等宏大主题。

 

Like most of the academic artists, Bai Ye has chosen “expressionism” and “abstract” to cope with his views against academism. Like most of Xi’an artists, he has finally “invented” his symbols opportune with both “Chinese tradition” and the “West”. Like most of the wide-field artists with a broader scope to comprehend art, he reads philosophy and experimental fictions. And like most of artists with independent thinking, he has developed a world of “individual system”, inviting whoever willing to sashay like Alice in her wonderland. It’s a world creating strong sense of seclusion from the reality. But your path would be a unique fabric of colorful pipe-alleys, instead of a rabbit-hole, and would be with the company of Bai Ye’s guidance on his redefinition of grand themes as God, Death, Budda, or Hell.
